"The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research builds on the strength of Virginia Tech's research and development and economic development activities. It is creating a vibrant source of innovation in south central Virginia. These programs demonstrate market-based results and ought to be replicated across the country."

The IALR's Advanced Learning division envisions the strategic development of a regional workforce built upon a new higher education model which provides seamless pathways in focused disciplines, delivered across the region through a blended learning approach. The ensuing development of a regional workforce will permit the mobility of workers throughout the region as well as establish a critical mass of expertise in the targeted economic sectors, thus attracting core economy businesses and industries.

Strategic areas of focus, several of which have been established and supported by existing IALR research centers, include:

Performance Engineering (VIPER)
Unmanned Systems and Robotics (JOUSTER)
Forestry and Horticulture (ISRR)
Applied Polymers and Materials Science (AAPPI)
Information Technology
Nanotechnology and Electrical Systems

In each strategic area, the plan is to offer a seamless pathway of articulated degree programs, from high school dual enrollment and technical courses, to associate degrees, to bachelor degrees, to graduate degrees. Students will choose to terminate their studies at different points along the pathway depending on their career aspirations.
