The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) is pleased to announce the 2010 Summer Internship Program. IALR will place approximately 45 college students with local businesses, including IALR, who will provide interns with meaningful on-the-job training and real-world leadership development experiences in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The intent of this program is to encourage students to return to Southern Virginia for employment once they complete their college education. Funding for the program is provided through a grant from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. During the 8-week program, the interns work with a local employer in a position related to his or her academic and career interests. “Part of the mission of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research is to develop and attract talented individuals to Southern Virginia,” said Amanda Glenn, Program Coordinator. “The Internship Program is designed not only to provide meaningful job experience to interns, but it is also designed to introduce college students to potential employers as well as introduce employers to skilled young professionals."
Other Internship Opportunities
Comments from Class of 2009 Interns:
- Guarav Dongaonkar, Swedwood Intern
"Thanks to the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research and DanChem Technologies, I have been able to observe an actual job in Danville. With our economy, it has been growing harder and harder for me to picture myself finding a job in the area, but now I can see there is possibility. It is opportunities like this one I was given that will continue to help build up the jobs in our city so that college graduates, like me, can come home and work." - Tara Prentice, DanChem Intern
"I am extremely glad that I took this summer internship opportunity. Over the course of my summer I have learned a great deal, and I have obtained valuable work experience. When applying for jobs in the IT field, many employers want to know about work experience. Now that I have a couple of months of work experience it will be a little bit easier to obtain a job after college. I am also grateful for the training I have received. Many of the hands on tasks I have accomplished here at the IALR will be covered in future classes. Now that I have performed these tasks myself, lab activities should be much simpler for me compared to those students who have never had the opportunity to touch these systems ." - Jameson Finney, IALR Intern
"This program was a huge benefit to our work this summer!"
