"I came to IALR in 2006 as a VT mechanical engineering graduate student and immediately began conducting cutting edge research in robotics and unmanned systems in IALR's brand new state-of-the-art facility. I gained invaluable real world experience in hardware and software design, teamwork and project management. My experience throughout the two years exceeded my expectations, and I would not change a thing about my decision to earn my graduate degree from VT in Southside Virginia at IALR."

K-12 Faculty Development

This program's purpose is to establish partnerships with K-12 leaders in the region and engage Virginia Tech to assist in developing technology, science, and math capacity in teachers, administrators, and schools. The program's goals include enhancement of math, science, and technology in the curriculum, and the creation of seamless pathways to IALR strategic academic programs.

SEDI

The Southside Educators' Development Institute gives teachers new skills in using technology as a teaching tool and guides educators in the process of deciding how to incorporate technology into their teaching practice. In addition to providing content on instructional technology, SEDI will offer specific opportunities for science and mathematics educators on emerging topics in those fields. SEDI 2008 provided educators with opportunities to:

  • learn about cutting-edge research in nanotechnology, biotechnology, bioinformatics and robotics
  • participate in hands-on learning experiences using various technology tools
  • evaluate a wide variety of learning technologies and tools in the IALR Emporium computer lab and the Multimedia Development Center
  • develop and exchange curriculum units
  • learn about current pedagogical techniques
