My previous research for my dissertation was focused on the electrospinning of poly(acrylonitrile) solutions to obtain nanofiberous non-woven materials. These materials were then thermally processed in various ways to obtain flexible, binderless, and collectorless carbon electrodes which have applications in various types of energy conversion and storage devices. When applied to lithium ion battery anodes, the fully prepared anodes were 100 wt% active material and demonstrated capacities in excess of the theoretical limit of graphitic carbons with capacity retentions of >95% at the 100th cycle at a C/4 discharge rate.
